Our History

Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service emerged in 1980 from the need for the disparate voluntary sector groups to have a common voice to local government and statutory authorities in the newly expanded Peterborough area. From an initial working group with representatives from several local charities, community organisations, housing associations and the city council PCVS was constituted under Voluntary Council guidelines.

Membership grew to more than 350 groups over the next 40 or so years.  Originally, PCVS was housed in Lincoln Court on Lincoln Road, moved to Cromwell Road around 2014 and is now part of the thriving community of small businesses at the Allia Centre on London Road.

Our Successes

Notable successes include building a respected and supportive team to manage direct payments when this was devolved to the benefit recipients. And delivering complete face to face courses in charity management from finance and governance to volunteering and fundraising. You can read about our more recent success stories here.

PCVS is part of a wider network of CVSs within Cambridgeshire and works through a memorandum of understanding with them. We are also a member of NAVCA (National Association for Voluntary and Community Action).
