Peterborough PTC Visits BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

PCVS visit to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

Last month a couple of our Poverty Truth Community Empowerers, Sadie and Sarah, visited BBC Radio Cambridgeshire along with our Training and Infrastructure Lead Clare and our Acting CEO Jonathan. We asked our Empowerers to give us a few notes about their experience, and you can see them below.

Sadie:

Sadie was really happy about the amount of community groups there, and also had this to say, “small stories can turn into something big.” Is that inspiring, or what?

Sarah:

“On the 13th of May we went to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. I had no idea what to expect from the evening. I was a mix of both excitement and nerves. Knowing how the media can manipulate what people tell them to fit their own narrative terrifies me especially with all the hard work of the community groups are putting in to make society a better place.

Once we arrived, we were greeted by some of the BBC producers, presenters and staff. I found them to be really friendly and less scary than I had imagined. They had put on spread of food and drink, which looked amazing. There was a lot of community from all over Cambridgeshire. We heard many stories of all the amazing work that is going on to support people from all backgrounds.

Once we had some time to network and eat, we were split into 3 groups. Each group took turns talking to different aspects of the BBC and how communities can benefit from working with them.

In the first session the BBC took time to listen to views from each community helping to alleviate the fears people have of the media. They also took time to explain how they get their stories. They explained that they want to hear more from members of the community that don’t always shout the loudest.

In the second session we spoke to the online team. They explained how things go from the radio to online and vice versa.

In the third session we had a tour of the radio studio, which got me imagining that I had my own radio show. I know that’s a long shot, but it gave us an idea of what to expect if we are ever invited into the studio.

Overall, I found the experience eye opening. They put a lot of my fears to bed. That being said, there is still a wall up that the BBC have to get over by building on the trust they gained from this event.”
